Back in June 2009 I started fundraising with 12 other students from Yale College to go on a skill sharing college trip to South Africa. Overall we had students from the arts faculty (my faculty), catering, sport and hair and beauty fundraise £1200 to make it to Cape Town on the 16th of February 2010. We stayed for 12 days and visited Robben Island, V&A Waterfront, Athlone Stadium, Bo Kaap, District Six Museum, Flea markets, Aquila Safari, Langa Pottery Museum, Talfalah Primary School, Manenberg High School, Khayletsha Aids Orphanage, Table Mountain, Cape Point, Boulders Beach, Camps Bay Beach and Rustenberg Vineyard. The primary reason why we went was to visit the schools in order to share our skills that we've developed at college and to be the first Welsh college to connect with Cape Town. The people of Cape Town were fascinated with our country they've never heard of before and enjoyed talking with us. Overall the trip was a great success, we bonded with the people, shared skills, learnt about each other's lives and cultures and had a very emotional experience that will stay with us forever. The money I earn from the photos I've taken in South Africa will go towards returning to Cape Town with the college next year and donated to the aids orphanage.
This is one of the young girls from Khayletsha Aids Orphanage. We gave our shoebox/giftbags of items to the children. It was the most emotional day of the trip. This is my favourite photo because it shows that the children have next to nothing but can still be happy. Just shows that we have a lot to learn. We saw a little bit of their reality and it makes me feel guilty of everything I have. Why do we want everything, the newest models, the latest video games and technology when there are people out there that can't afford anything. Experiencing it first hand you realise that just interacting with them, playing games, giving them hugs, holding their hand, letting them play with your hair is enough to make a difference, albeit a tiny difference but really all that matters is caring and giving to those less fortunate.
Your photo is really inspiring. I am a volunteer at childrens home and, yes, a hug or a visit to a child can bring so much joy. What a winderful cause. Thank u for sharing it here.
I have seen your AMAZING hotographs on Deviant art and am wondering if there is any possible way to use some of your images for a research assessment project done for The Mellon Housing initiative to get funds.
Its an impact assessment based on the living conditions of an African family living in a shack versus a family in a low cost house and the impact that those families have to deal with. This is done for the department of Social development. Its a project that has taken 3 years of research and collected data. We would like to use this report to get housing / funds for our people.
We can put your name next to your photo. It would be so great to show this report using images. I am the designer who is doing the design gratis and have attached my concept for you to see. The images I have used here are not mine and so I am emailing these photographers to ask permission to use their photos. It will help in our tenders to gather funds.
Please let me know if you can help. I have uploaded a PDF file of what the design will look like on my profile
this child's eyes have seen so much. this image is very moving and thank you for posting the explanation as well, as I now have more of an idea of the situation. I am going to South Africa this spring to hopefully bring and share some healing art making there. you captured this moment so powerfully! we can only hope that people really do make even just that tiny difference every chance they get.
